What is Education? When I questioned this to myself, I found many answers- “Education is the passport to tomorrow”. “Education is the most powerful tool to change the world”. “Education is the key to unlocking the world”. So, if education is all this, then why is it that our younger generation is constantly in a state of anxiety, conflict and resultant fear? Have we, as educators lost our touch with the real essence of education? I feel, we need to seriously take a “Keeping Quiet” moment as suggested by Pablo Neruda and refine our goals as the shapers of the next generation. Our goals need to extend their arms much beyond the completion of the curriculum as drafted by bodies like the CBSE. The real area that needs to be tapped is the quality of mind. Alas! gaining knowledge through the curriculum has a miniscule role in the development of a good quality mind and yet it is all that an educator is concerned about. In my opinion, if we change our goals to encompass a system that helps in devoloping a curious rather than an anxious mind and critically and creatively thinking rather than a conflicting mind half the battle is instantly won. In the light of the above, I wholeheartedly welcome the decision of the Education Ministry to introduce 5+3+3+4 system of education in the country. I hope and pray that this system finds its way into our classrooms in its true letter and spirit. Let’s all take the much delayed first step towards creating personalities that are equipped with the power to adapt to the changing world, that are not afraid to meet the life challenges head on and “Where the mind is truly without fear …….” God bless!
